| Current Titles | ![]() One of America’s greatest interubans was the Sacramento Northern, which at its peak could provide a 185-mile trip, between San Francisco and Chico, California, without change of cars and including two ferry rides. From its beginnings in 1906 with the Northern Electric Railway lines north of Sacramento, California, later joined by the Oakland, Antioch & Eastern Railway from Oakland to Sacramento, the SN carried both freight and passengers over its long electrified line. Passenger service over the main line ended in 1941, and electrified freight service south of Sacramento ended in 1957. Some local switching in the Marysville-Yuba City area continued until 1965. But the Western Pacific, its parent since 1929, continued to use SN trackage with diesel power and, in some cases, equipment lettered for Sacramento Northern, until the merger with Union Pacific in 1983. This fine volume of history, enriched with 471 photographs, most never before published, and 20 maps and drawings, along with detailed equipment histories and summaries of streetcar and freight services, is the most complete account of the history, construction and operation of the Sacramento Northern ever published. Traction fans everywhere, and particularly those enthused about Sacramento Northern, will be enthralled with this book, but the SN’s Western Pacific connection and freight service heritage mean that many fans of mainline railroading will find it interesting and enjoyable too.
