Daniel P. Holbrook grew up one block away from the CB&Q and developed an early interest in photography and model railroading. The 1970 Burlington Northern merger of CB&Q with GN, NP and SP&S shifted the author’s focus to the combined railroads. Hiring out as an agent/operator with BN in 1973, he worked a variety of jobs including tower-operator, crew caller, car distributor, yardmaster and trainmaster, retiring from BNSF in 2015. Dan also met his wife, Linda, working for BN in 1978.
Shortly after starting work at BN he visited the Twin Ports of Duluth, MN and Superior, WI and developed a lifelong interest in the history, boats, industry and railroads of Northern Minnesota. That interest led to the construction of a large railroad model of Duluth and Superior in his basement circa September, 1970.
This is the author’s second book. He has written extensively for various model railroad magazines. Starting in 1972 the author began extensive photography of locomotives and freight cars, much of which has been featured in books and magazines. Those photos have also been used by model railroad manufacturers to produce models. During the past few years he has assisted in archiving the Missabe Railroad Historical Society archives and written for their publication “Ore Extra.”
